How Exactly Do Eye Creams Work?

The Science Behind Beautiful Eyes

For many people, the quest to find a way to slow down the signs of aging and fight wrinkles, is fraught with disappointment and products that don't deliver. They’ve tried them all, but none of them work. Until now.

It’s hard to believe, but fighting the visible signs of aging is easier than you think. Clinically-proven active ingredients, backed by real research and scientific data, that have been patented, are the secret we’ve all been waiting for. These are the key to bringing you the results that you are looking for. From our research, we’ve come to the conclusion that patented active ingredients can work wonders, given a quality product at the correct potency.

Many skincare products are made of unnecessary and harmful chemicals, the secret is knowing which active ingredients to look for. Caring for your skin and fighting the signs of aging should not be difficult or cause damage. Your daily skincare routine should include thoroughly cleansing your skin, hydrating and protecting it from external toxins. Nourishing eye creams are intended to restore firmness and hydrate the skin to reduce or minimize wrinkles and provide a defensive layer from environmental agents.

We have discovered that a traditional blend of ingredients coupled with the latest biotechnology research, results in gorgeously supple skin and provides excellent benefits for nurturing the delicate skin around the eye area.

Moisturize To Restore And Repair The Dermal Layers

The skin is the largest organ in the body and is composed of three layers - epidermis, dermis and a subcutaneous tissue layer called the hypodermis (made up of fat and connective tissue). Moisturizing eye creams work to replenish moisture (water) back to the skin to ensure that it remains hydrated because when skin becomes dry, surface cells flake and fall off leaving skin looking puckered and wrinkled. Using a quality eye cream promotes healthy water content in the delicate skin around the eyes, ensuring that it remains supple, moist, and feeling smooth to the touch.

Epidermis

The epidermis is the top layer of the skin which is composed of dead skin cells connected by a protein matrix. It is broken into several layers which include (bottom to top) stratum basale, stratum spinosum, stratum granulosum, and the stratum corneum. A fifth layer, the stratum lucidum, is evident in areas such as the bottom of your feet where the skin is thicker. While these cells don't get a blood supply, they are essential in creating a protective barrier for the skin.

The top layer of the epidermis helps contain moisture within the skin, and is normally made up of about 15% water. When the moisture content drops, the skin starts to look dry and flaky until it eventually starts cracking. Anti-aging eye creams work by rehydrating this layer of the skin and stimulating damaged cells to repair themselves.

Dermis

The dermis is the middle layer of the skin and offers structural support for the skin, as well as, connecting the epidermis to the blood vessels, lymph vessels, and nerves. The dermis is thinner (like the skin on your neck) and therefore more prone to wrinkling due to dryness. The primary function of a moisturizer is to delay the loss of moisture and a good cream will work to retain the moisture already present within the dermis. Moisturizers work to trap in moisture in the dermis before it has a chance to escape. Moisturizing the skin is a crucial component of every skincare regimen, which allows the skin to trap the water in the dermis and the viable layers of the epidermis to maintain healthy, supple and youthful skin.

Hypodermis

The hypodermis is the deepest layer that anchors the skin to muscles and naturally contains fat. It is where skin cells are formed. The natural cycle of the skin means that as new cells are created, dead cells on the epidermis will be worn away, a process that takes around a month. During this time, new skin cells, produced in the hypodermis, rise to the epidermis and flake off.

The point is that no cream will be able to revive these cells, however, if these are removed (preferably via exfoliation) younger, newer, viable cells will dominate and help the skin look more radiant. The hypodermis benefits greatly from a balanced diet and perhaps even a nutritional supplement such as phytoceramides to help maintain the health of the skin cell renewal hub.

Most products are formulated using one or more of the three main types of substances which include: humectants, emollients and occlusive compounds. Each of these components has a unique mechanism of action and the majority of skincare manufacturers will use a combination of these ingredients to create a synergistic effect for the most positive results.

What Should You Look For In An Effective Eye Cream?

We have all been let down by products that promise to help you look younger, only to find a month later that nothing has changed. However, anti-aging eye creams really do work – if you find a legitimate, quality product.

Whenever a skincare or beauty trend hits the market, dozens of cosmetic companies spring up overnight to try and cash in. As a result, you’ll find lots of watered-down anti-aging formulas that promise results they simply can’t deliver.

A good product will use the highest-quality patented active ingredients, and contain a minimum of 2% (the higher the better). You should also look for reputable companies that sell a range of products.

When you see a company that’s only selling one item and uses some hot marketing slogans in the name, you’re going to want to steer clear.

If you want to try out any of these promising anti-aging eye creams, check out our review of eye creams, where we analyzed the ingredients, company's reputation, customer reviews, and more to help you find the products that get you the results that you are looking for. Now, you don’t have to scratch your head when you Google ‘Best Eye Cream’ and end up with hundreds of results. We’ve taken the guesswork out of the equation!

What Makes An Eye Cream More Effective Than Others?

The secret lies in the exact formula offered by the manufacturer. Products that use active ingredients that are backed by clinical research are what's going to make the difference. Look for ingredients that are patented which means that they have been scientifically tested and approved. Moreover, the formula should contain a high percentage of active ingredients designed to hydrate the skin and replenish missing essential nutrients, as well as, provide a defensive layer to protect against environmental toxins that damage and age the skin prematurely. Eye creams that offer protection and support for each layer of the skin are essential in the battle to fight the visible signs of aging and sustain youthful looks for longer.

Read the labels and educate yourself on ingredients. Use the best kept secrets from the laboratory to enjoy youthful, beautiful skin that defies the signs of aging.

#2 Pick

Olay Eyes Ultimate Eye Cream

Just short of our top product is a formula from Olay called Olay Eyes Ultimate Eye Cream. This product, from a very popular, well known skincare manufacturer, offers a formula designed to fight wrinkles, reduce puffy eyes and dark circles with its catchy marketing slogans of DeCircler, DeWrinkler and DePuffer! Sounds more like a German language exam! That aside, the manufacturer suggests that its powerful formula (which contains color-correcting technology that acts as a touch of concealer) works instantly to reduce fine lines and wrinkles. It hydrates the skin to smooth and brighten the eye area. Grand claims or honest statements? We continued digging to find the answers. Although this product contains several key vitamins and peptides, we were unable to find any ingredients that are backed by clinical studies or classified as patented which is disappointing, especially for a large organization such as Procter & Gamble.

We found several customer testimonials on its website, surprisingly, many were actually quite negative, with one saying that it was actually 'drying and stinging', which is worrying and leaves us with some questions about its suitability for all skin types. Perhaps, people with sensitive skin types should avoid this product or at the very least, perform a patch test to ensure that they are not allergic to this in any way.

We liked the fact that this product contains peptides and vitamins aimed at rejuvenating the eye area. However, our main dislike was that this formula contains coloring which makes this product more like a concealer rather than a nourishing eye cream. The color aspect would eliminate being able to use it at night time as the mess of the pillowcase the next morning would clearly show. It is a shame that this product is not sustainable for use during the night time hours, which is a great time to apply restorative creams, so that they can go to work while you rest! The price is pretty good and the product is easily available in stores and online which is always a positive aspect for consumers. However, we ended up knocking it down to the #2 spot as it fell short of our chosen top product. That said, if you prefer buying from big name brands and you are looking for a product that also acts as a concealer, this product could be the one for you.

#3 Pick

Epionce Renewal Eye Cream

Our #3 choice is a product made by Epionce and called Renewal Eye Cream, said to be suitable for all skin types. This manufacturer suggests that this is a moisturizing must-have to help diminish the visible appearance of fine lines and wrinkles around the delicate eye area. Using soft-focus technology, key ingredients work to reduce dark circles and puffiness. It should be used twice a day and is supplied in a 15 g tube.

The ingredients contained within this formula are clearly displayed on its website, which is great news if you are interested in discovering more about the product - transparency is always best. The ingredients include a long list of what we would call both inactive and active. The active ingredients include rose, safflower, meadowfoam, flaxseed, shea butter, apple, olive oil, lavender, avocado, date and hyaluronic acid. However, it is not clear exactly how much of each there is, which is a shame. The other disappointment is that none of these ingredients are backed by clinical studies, so we only have the manufacturer's word to take for the claims it makes. Given that this product costs $70, this is a risky purchase.

We have reviewed several products from this company and we have to say, we like these guys. They invest in a lot of research and they formulate products based on what they believe will provide great results. We would like to have seen a confident money back guarantee but they do not offer one, again slightly off putting. We also struggled to find some reviews for this product which always gives a great understanding of whether or not its worth buying. The main reason that we placed this product as our #3 option is the price, it is much higher than many other similar products on the market.

If you don’t mind the high price and the fact it isn't backed by clinical studies, this could be right for you.
