With ingredients like Retinol, Hyaluronic acid and Jojoba oil, Hopemate Retinol cream seems to have the perfect base for an ideal Retinol cream. On closer inspection however, it fell just short of our top choice due to a number of factors. While we appreciate a powerful dose of Retinol, we think that 2.5% standardization of Retinol is too strong and may cause unwanted damage and peeling. Based on our research, we found that 2.5% is not necessary in order to get the desired effect that you’re looking for and recommend a safer standardization of 1%. Despite this, Hopemate had many positive aspects and clinically researched ingredients in their formula, which is what motivated us to place it as our second choice.
We appreciate the combination of Retinol and Hyaluronic acid as these ingredients work synergistically together creating an optimal formula, however there is no mention of the standardization used in the Hyaluronic acid (we usually look for at least 5%), nor does it include soluble Collagen for the added boost to plump up the skin for a smoother appearance. We did like that it comes in a pump bottle, so the cream is not exposed to the air, but we didn’t see any mention of a GMP certification nor a satisfaction guarantee.
Is Hopemate Retinol Cream Effective?
While the combination of Retinol, Hyaluronic acid, Jojoba oil and Vitamin E is essential for a wrinkle-free moisturized look, we feel 2.5% Retinol strength is quite strong and may cause more damage than it’s worth. We also discovered via the reviews for this product that the manufacturer updated the formula as well as the price of this cream and the consumers are quite disappointed. They claim that the new formula doesn’t absorb into the skin and creates an oily layer causing acne.
The bottom line is that we’re not convinced that Hopemate Retinol cream has created a winning formula. We would have liked to see a more precise breakdown of the exact percentage of active vs inactive ingredients to allow us to provide a more precise summary of this product. We were also missing a satisfaction guarantee, something that maybe would have convinced us that this product is worth trying, because then we would feel that we have nothing to lose. Unfortunately, we didn't find any mention of a satisfaction guarantee.
Is Hopemate Retinol Cream Safe?
We feel that Retinol at 2.5% is bordering unsafe and may cause peeling, redness and damage to the skin. If not applied with a sunscreen of at least 40 SPF, you may cause permanent damage. Aside from this, the other ingredients appear to be safe, although there is no cGMP certification so it is impossible to know what conditions the product is made in.
Summary
On the one hand, we feel that this formula has a strong foundation for a winning formula, however, on the other hand, we feel that the manufacturer just missed the mark. We like the combination of Retinol together with Hyaluronic acid and Jojoba oil, but the Retinol strength is too strong at 2.5% and may cause the opposite of the wanted effect by causing damage and peeling skin. We also feel that the formula would have been more effective with the addition of soluble Collagen.
While we usually applaud a manufacturer who has recreated their product for a better version, it seems that this wasn’t the case with Hopemate Retinol cream. Based on reviews we found online, customers are disappointed with the new formula and the significant increase in price. Along with the fact that there is no guarantee, we are not convinced that Hopemate Retinol cream would be our first choice when choosing a Retinol moisturizer.
