Omega XL didn't quite make the cut for our #1 spot for various reasons. Overall, this product does have some positive points but there are certain elements which raised some red flags for us. Its low daily serving, lack of transparency, as well as the fact that we found many negative reviews made us slightly wary as to whether this works well or not.
Is Omega XL Effective?
Omega XL claims to contain over 30 omega-3 fatty acids derived from the Green-Lipped Mussel which is native to New Zealand. While this type of shellfish is a popular source of omega-3 fatty acids, what is found in this product leaves a lot to be desired.
When looking at an omega-3 supplement, its formula and dosage are the most important for effective results. Omega XL contains a proprietary blend of Green-Lipped Mussel oil, extra virgin olive oil and vitamin E. It provides a very low dosage of only 300mg per 2 capsules, and it is not clear how much of this blend is the Green-Lipped Mussel oil which provides the omega-3s. The problem with proprietary blends is that usually the ingredients you are looking to get the benefits of are watered down to the point of not providing much benefit at all. Customer reviews seem to add to this concern with many stating that this product does not work.
We are very apprehensive of celebrity endorsements for health supplements, which this product has, as we believe that a product’s merit should be based on its formula. Surprisingly, the manufacturer does not delve into the finer details of its formula on its website, and we had to hunt down the product label on Amazon. This is a huge concern. The manufacturer’s site also mentions a clinical study about the benefits of Green-Lipped Mussel for joint pain, yet provides no links to this study. In our own research, we found conflicting evidence to the benefits of Green-Lipped Mussel for joint pain. It seems to offer benefits when combined with other pain medications, which most people are looking to avoid when taking a nutritional health supplement. The majority of studies found that it was no better than a placebo for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis.
Bottom Line: We are not sure if Omega XL will get you the results that you are looking for. It provides a low daily serving and is lacking many details about its formulation.
Is Omega XL Safe?
Omega XL is made up of a proprietary blend of Green-Lipped Mussel oil, olive oil and vitamin E. It is not clear how much of each ingredient makes up the 300mg daily serving and how these ingredients relate to each other. Generally, Green-Lipped Mussel should not have any side effects, though some stomach discomfort has occasionally been reported. If you are taking any medications, particularly blood thinning medications, you should consult your doctor before using this product.
Summary
We liked that this product uses Green-Lipped Mussel as an omega-3 source, however, the amount it contains is not clear. And the dosage is everything if you want effective results. It is also not clear why the manufacturer combined the omega-3s with olive oil and vitamin E. Omega-3s are beneficial on their own, yet the addition of other ingredients will water down these benefits. As this is a proprietary blend, we don’t know how much of the low 300mg daily serving is actually omega-3 fatty acids. Most of that amount could be the olive oil. We recommend using a product that only contains pure omega-3 fatty acids with no additional ingredients and with the amounts clearly indicated on the label.
