Nutiva Organic MCT Powder Review

We consider Nutiva Organic MCT Powder to be a better quality product than others out there because the company uses 100% pure coconut oil as its MCT Oil source. However, it contains C12 compounds, also known as Lauric Acid. C12s are purposely left out of most MCT Oil products because they function as long chain triglycerides when they are in your body. We were also dismayed to see the addition of Acacia fiber and Maltodextrin which are completely non-essential filler ingredients and detract from the efficacy of MCT Oil. A final complaint heard by customers is that this powder does not dissolve properly. Still, because there is a large interest in powdered forms of MCT Oil, we decided to give you a complete rundown of this product.

Is Nutiva Organic MCT Powder Effective?

When we looked at the source of Nutiva Organic MCT Powder, we were very pleased to see that it comes from coconut oil. This company is not taking the cheaper way out and uses palm kernel oil which is known to be detrimental to the environment. However, when using coconut oil, most companies will filter out the Lauric Acid, also known as C12. MCT stands for Medium Chain Triglyceride, and while technically C12 is medium-sized, it has properties of an LCT, a long chain triglyceride.

Upon absorption, MCTs go directly to the liver to be broken down quickly whereas LCTs must first travel through the lymph system and are also more likely to be stored as fat rather than be used right away for energy or converted to ketones. For this reason, we were disappointed to see the inclusion of C12 in this MCT Oil powder.

Some other elements of this product were also not so straightforward. The fact that this product is manufactured with fillers, such as Acacia fiber and Maltodextrin, is also a cause for chagrin. One of the selling points about MCT Oil generally is that it is tasteless and odorless so there's actually no reason to mix it with additives and fillers. Even worse, this added fiber and flavor detracts from the efficacy of the product.

So, we went looking to see what consumers had to say, and it seems that many customers had difficulty getting Nutiva Organic MCT Powder to properly dissolve into their coffee! People reported this for both hot and cold beverages and even using a hand blender didn't help. For a product marketed as a mixable powder, it seems to have missed the mark. Unfortunately, the return policy is only for 45 days and is only applicable for unopened containers. We could see they were trying to create an effective product but it didn't quite get there.

Is Nutiva Organic MCT Powder Safe?

We did not find any ingredients in this product that would cause it to be unsafe, such as uncertified stimulant ingredients or other herbs however, we did find that it is easy to take more MCT Oil than recommended with this powder because of the dissolving issues it has. Taking too much MCT Oil is reported to cause major stomach upset. It is always wise to confer with your health professional before adding any dietary supplement.

Summary

Nutiva Organic MCT Powder had the right idea in making their product from pure coconut oil. However, we prefer recommending products without C12s (Lauric Acid) as it detracts from the efficacy of the true Medium Chain Triglycerides which are C8s and C10s. The additions of Acacia fiber and Maltodextrin seem unnecessary in a product known to be tasteless and odorless and only serve to add fillers, which again takes away from how potent this product could be. Furthermore, there is a difficulty actually consuming this powder as it does not dissolve easily. Still, people may be tempted to try this MCT Oil powder as it's more palatable than straight MCT Oil. Unfortunately, there is a risk in trying this product as the return policy is only valid for 45 days and only unopened containers are accepted. Our final say is that this powder would need to lose the extra ingredients in order to get a higher rating.
