Doctor’s Best Astaxanthin Review

Doctor’s Best Astaxanthin offers a 6 mg daily serving in a veggie softgel. The Astaxanthin used in this product is also from the certified AstaReal® which is sourced from the highest quality Haematococcus pluvialis. It's not quite the world's #1 choice but it is good substitute. Being the sole ingredient in this product, Doctor’s Best relies entirely on Astaxanthin for providing effective results. Manufactured in the United States, Doctor’s Best boasts that its products are quality tested, including the various raw materials they use from around the globe regardless of origin.

Is Doctor’s Best Astaxanthin Effective?

Once again this product offers a significantly lower daily serving than our first choice. With just 6 mg per daily serving, is this enough to get you the benefits you’re looking for? We like that this manufacturer uses a top-quality Astaxanthin by using the certified AstaReal® Astaxanthin which is carefully produced in a highly sterile environment. But again, there are no additional ingredients included in the formula that would boost the effects of Astaxanthin such as Vitamin E or the synergistic component Zinc. While we noticed that there is Olive oil listed in the other ingredients, we surmise this is to help the Astaxanthin absorb into the the body because of its fat-soluble properties, we feel Doctor’s Best could have raised the ante a bit by including a bioavailability factor like black pepper. It is an ingredient they are certainly familiar with, since it appears in some other products of theirs, so we were not sure why they wouldn’t include it here too.

We were disappointed that there is no mention of a guarantee, like we found in our first two products. A guarantee is a manufacturer’s gesture that they believe in their product. We also noticed in the list of other ingredients that it mentions Carrageenan. This is a rather controversial ingredient since it has been found to cause unwanted symptoms that may include cramping, bloating, ulcers and more. This ingredient is often used in vegan-friendly products as a gelatin alternative. We have already found a product that is vegan which does not include such harmful ingredients, so we know it is possible. Therefore, we would have liked a bit more insight on the part of the manufacturer, in terms of finding a healthier alternative than using an inflammatory ingredient to market the product as vegan.

Is Doctor’s Best Astaxanthin Safe?

The only questionable ingredient we found listed in the ‘other ingredients’ is Carrageenan. This red seaweed extract may trigger unwanted symptoms such as inflammation, ulcers and digestive problems.

Summary

Doctor’s Best is a solid company with a rich history in supplements. Sometimes, however, we feel they are still stuck in the past. Firstly, their daily serving is significantly lower than the clinically proven recommended daily amount. You would need to take 2 softgels to reach the 12 mg daily serving. They do offer a 90-count bottle, so perhaps financially it may be practical. While we do appreciate the effort they’ve made to produce a vegan-friendly Astaxanthin, something that is certainly not common with regards to Astaxanthin products, we were disappointed that the alternative included an ingredient that is extremely controversial and may cause symptoms that would negate the benefits of Astaxanthin. In addition, we feel they could’ve amped up their game with additional antioxidant elements in the formula, such as Vitamin E. As much as we appreciate the positive aspects of this product, there is still room for improvement.
